Every December, people from around the world arrive to Puerto Vallarta in droves just to witness the majestic Humpback whales as they make their annual 16,000 mile reproductive migration. Extending through March, visitors can take one of the many tours offered in the region to observe these marvelous creatures up close and personal in their natural habitat.

Weighing up to 79,000 lbs., the Humpback whale is easily identified by its black dorsal fin and the hump on its back for which it was named. These giants of the sea were once hunted to near extinction; however, conservation efforts have returned the species to a sustainable population level. During migration season, the Humpback whales are plentiful in the Banderas Bay, often visible through the bell tower at Hacienda San Angel.
